4D Printed Emergency Shelter

Location

United Kingdom

Project type

Academic

Date

Dec 2023

This project focuses on developing an innovative emergency shelter using parametric design tools, 4D printing techniques, and deformable polymax PLA filament. I aim to create a scalable prototype that can shrink and deform in hot water for cost-effective production and easy transportation. The design process involves three methods: Karamba simulation, Panelling Tools with curvature analysis, and Shrink Morph mathematical surface analysis. A feedback loop is established by 3D scanning physical prototypes and comparing them to initial digital models to optimize and identify the most effective method for achieving the desired shelter characteristics.
